Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Lord Nelson Tavern: a Halifax watering hole in the early 1960s. The group of young university students who hang out therea ramshackle coterie of aspiring artists, economists, poets, and philosopherscome together to gossip and ponder the big questions of art and life, all the while pining after the vain and untouchable Francesca.Though these friends soon drift apart, their early rivalries, jealousies and conquests will continue to reverberate. In the novels seven interlocking sequences, Ray Smith explores the often decisive and even fatal impact of seemingly innocuous choices upon the course of our lives. With unforgettable scenes that marry the sacred and the profane, and with structural innovations that recall the works of Barthelme and Nabokov, Lord Nelson Tavern is a must-read cult-classic of Canadian fiction. A classic novel of Canadian postmodernism. Shipping may be from our Sydney, NSW warehouse or from our UK or US warehouse, depending on stock availability.

First Edition Signed
First edition. Signed (inscribed) by the author. Hardcover. Top edge foxed, otherwise fine in very good price-clipped dustjacket with some small closed tears along the top edge and some general light wear at the extremities. The paperback is in fine condition, in an added clear archival jacket for this copy. The second book (a novel/collection of linked stories) by the Canadian author of the wonderfully titled "Cape Breton is the thought control centre of Canada". "Lord Nelson Tavern" looks at a group of university students, habitues of a Halifax saloon, who weave in and out of one another's lives over the years. The post-modernist style is heightened with Smith's remarkable control of voice, and the stories are elaborately crafted, playful, and self-referential. The first edition is an interesting association copy inscribed by the author to Australian poet and novelist Roger McDonald, with some references to shared drinking bouts. The paperback copy included here is in the "New Canadian Library" series of modern classics, #158, the copyright page stating 1974, but most likely from the 1980s. It is inscribed by Smith to a woman (first name only) in a humorous, slightly flirtatious manner. Neither inscription is dated, but both likely to have been done in the late 1980s. These copies to be sold as a pair.
