Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The fortunes of the wives and girlfriends (WAGs) of prominent footballers has changed a lot down the years -- from the wives of 1966 being completely excluded from the official celebrations following England's World Cup victory to their antics at the 2006 World Cup in Germany that some said contributed to the team's failures on the pitch. However the 'Wagatha Christie' trial, brought by Rebekah Vardy (wife of England striker Jamie) against Coleen (wife of former England captain Wayne Rooney) set a new high watermark as a feud between WAGs was played out in the High Court. For several weeks minute-by-minute accounts of the action were followed as closely as any high-profile football match with instant reaction on social media and daily splashes in the tabloids. Award-winning reporter Harry Harris traces the history of the WAGs from the humble marriage of England captain Billy Wright to one of the Beverly Sisters to the glamour of Bobby and Tina Moore and the rise of Posh and Becks. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. THE BUSBY BABES remain unique in British football. Emerging in a post-war 1950s era of austerity and rationing, they gave a glimpse of the youthful enthusiasm and talent that would emerge a decade later in music and art, while their untimley deaths, at the end of a snowy runway in Munich, inspired a devotion to Manchester United Football Club at odds with staid 1950s behaviour. In this, his fi nal update on his classic work, John Roberts revisits the original interviews he undertook with the relatives of the deceased and the survivors. What emerges is an unsentimental work that remains the greatest account of the tragedy. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Updated with new photographs. Colin Blaney's "Grafters", originally published in 2004, was a ground-breaking expose of the links between criminal gangs and football hooliganism. In the intervening period the book and the phrase have become part of the lexicon, defining a generation of professional thieves who used the cover of their fellow football fans to earn a fortune. Eight years on author Colin Blaney returns with an updated version of his criminal memoirs and recounts his experiences as a personality in the murky media world that accompanies public relations -- principally his shady dealings with tabloid journalists, TV producers and researchers. In Colin's words he was thrown in at the deep end to "Swim with the sharks". It's all a far cry from Colin's adolescence in the council fl ats of North Manchester. As a child he burgled warehouses and factories. As a youth he joined the bootboys of Manchester United's Red Army, rampaging across the country. As an adult he learned to dip with the Scouse pickpocket gangs, sell dope to Rastas in the Moss Side shebeens and sneak-thieve from shop tills with his mad Collyhurst crew. But Continental Europe offered the greatest lure. The gang moved to Amsterdam which became their HQ for the next twenty years. They stole Rolex watches in Switzerland, peddled Ecstasy in Spain, kited credit cards in Belgium, flogged bootleg tee-shirts in France and snatched designer clothes in Holland. Blaney and his Wide Awake Frim served time in half the jails in Europe and then went back for more. They were on a riotous, non stop roller-coaster ride -- until they finally hit the buffers. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Mark Blaney was a few years younger than his brother Colin (author of Grafters originally published by Milo in 2004, 9781903854280) and followed in his footsteps across Europe. His wry observations and laid back attitude make for a stark contrast to Colin's early forrays into the sneaktheiving game. What they had in common was a desire to seek a world beyond Manchester's council estates. By the 1980s the attitude 'get on your bike and look for work' was government policy, so the brothers were only following orders really. Mark fell into a life of low level crime quite easily. He honestly admits that he just was not cut out for normal work and the tales of the riches available abroad at little or no risk proved too tempting to turn down. Mark eventually settled down in Amsterdam and had a family. Adjusting to life as a dad proved difficult and he later returned to Manchester. Stuart Campbell is a different kind of grafter. A smart confidence trickster, a smooth talker, a visible presence with an eye for the ladies -- he preferred to stand out rather than blend in.This contrasting approach made him perfect for jobs requiring a legitimate front man or someone who wouldn't look out of place in a jewellers or a bank. This is the tale of those lads who lived high on the hog for a couple of decades across Europe robbing the natives blind. Like all rollercoaster rides, the lads knew it couldn't last -- this is the tale of how they survived when so many others didn't make it off. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. "On Thursday 7 July 2005, four bombs were detonated in London killing 52 people (including the bombers) and injuring a further 700. It was the first successful suicide bomb attack on British soil and the biggest terrorist atrocity since the 1988 Lockerbie bomb which brought down Pan Am flight 103. The four suicide bombers were named as Mohammed Sidique Khan, aged 30 of Beeston, Leeds; Shehzad Tanweer: aged 22 of Leeds; Germaine Lindsay: aged 19 from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire and Hasib Hussain, 18, from Holbeck in Leeds. Hasib Hussain was my son." In the immediate aftermath of the bombing there was much media attention focussed on Hasib's father. Mahmood Hussain was a hardworking Pakistani immigrant who had lived and worked in Leeds for almost 30 years by the time of the bombing. He was as astonished as anyone else that his son was one of the first UK suicide bombers. he also reveals that it was his amateur detective work that tracked down the terror cell of which his son had been a part. Prior to him mentioning the names of the other two local men involved, the police had no idea what they were dealing with. Here he tells the story of Hasib's upbringing and the facts behind many misreported aspects of Hasib's brief life from his trips to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to his education and his discussions with his father, just days before the attack, about his future plans and marriage. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Ernest Mangnall holds a unique place in the history of Mancunian football as the only man to manage both the city's major clubs, but his legacy runs much deeper than that as he also played a key role in both clubs finding new homes and even oversaw the move of Bolton Wanderers to Burnden Park. He is perhaps best remembered as the man who brought Manchester United their first major honours following the takeover by John Henry Davies. There he won two League Championships, an FA Cup and two Charity Shields during a nine-year reign and the irony won't be lost on City fans that those achievements were helped in part by the exodus of players from their club in the wake of an FA enquiry which found the club guilty for making 'under the counter' payments. Yet it was Mangnall's cunning as an administrator that allowed United to cherry-pick the cream of City's players luring the likes of Billy Meredith, Sandy Turnbull and Herbert Burgess to the club. The result was United's first great era but the club soon became mired in controversy as a number of FA enquiries that led to Davies being forced to relinquish control. Sensing the wind change, Mangnall felt no compunction in moving to City in 1914 where he stayed for a decade guiding the club through the devastation of the war before finding them a new home at Maine Road, a place still that remains in the hearts of City fans to this day. John Ernest Mangnall truly was the architect of Mancunian football. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The history of any football club boils down to one thing: great matches; be it a significant win, a great performance, a notable debut, an incredible moment or a disastrous defeat, the big games and historic turning points are what supporters remember. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The first Black African team to appear in a World Cup suffered casual racism and horrific stereotyping in the western media, were accused of throwing games by opponents, were conned out of bonuses by their own countrymen and ended with one of the worst records in the tournament's history -- conceding 14 goals in three games while scoring none in reply. Nevertheless, the Zaire team of 1974 lives long in the memory and not just because of that free-kick. Financially backed by President Mobutu, the Leopards had won two African championships and strolled through World Cup qualifying under the management of Blagoje Vidinic, a Yugoslav who managed to unite the disparate tribes of a country the size of Western Europe. Yet the campaign was dogged by controversy. Following a creditable performance against Scotland, the Zaire players learned that their much-trumpeted bonuses had been syphoned off by members of the World Cup delegation and threatened to strike. Only the threat of violence against their families forced them on to the pitch for the second game, which they proceeded to lose 9-0 to Yugoslavia. They were then threatened with summary execution if they lost by more than three goals in their final game against Brazil! Players were banned from leaving the country upon their return and the more militant were never selected for Zaire again. Mobutu then diverted the proceeds of his 'soccer tax' to fund the Rumble in the Jungle, considering boxing a far safer bet than football. Neil Andrews traces the fortunes of one of the most colourful finalists to grace the World Cup who blazed a trail for the likes of Cameroon, Senegal and Ghana at high personal cost for many of the team. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. When Graham Bean was appointed the Football Associations first Compliance Officer, he was instantly nicknamed The Sleazebuster by the tabloid press and quickly made headlines investigating football wrongdoing on and off the pitch which covered everything from dissent towards match officials by players to alleged financial corruption in the boardroom by chairmen. Yet throughout his time at the English games governing body there was a sense that his face didnt quite fit; as a blunt Yorkshireman and a former police detective he didnt shirk from asking awkward questions that put him on a collision course with the powers that be and he didnt take kindly to the old pals act that pervaded the FA whose ageing council members still held an iron grip on the professional game in the late 1990s. After leaving the FA Graham started his own business Football Factors which represented players and managers when they were summoned to appear before an FA Disciplinary Hearing. Among his stellar list of clients were Alex Ferguson, Rafa Benitez, David Moyes, Duncan Ferguson and many more and Grahams work with Fergie in particular led to more headlines as the FA sought to silence the dominant figure in the game. Graham went on to take up senior positions inside football clubs including working for Leeds United under notorious owner Mario Cellino during one of the most turbulent reigns in football history. An acrimonious split with the madcap Italian owner led to Bean becoming the FAs star witness in a case which led to the Italian receiving a lengthy ban from the game. He moved on to work in similar roles at Newport County and also crisis club Chesterfield FC but looking back on his career in the game after leaving his role as a detective with South Yorkshire Police, the advice of his late mother, Janet, rings true today: Football jobs are no good lad Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In his final round-up of singles by decade, following The Original Soundtrack, which covered the seismic 1970s and A Part of No Tribe, which took in the reactionary 1980s, Ian Moss looks at an era of splintering genres and confusing alliances in the 1990s.Indie music went corporate, while rap and dance music moved off street corners and out of bedrooms to dominate the charts. Eighties stars such as Madonna, U2 and Michael Jackson were quick to adjust while record companies desperate to cash-in on a wave of indie bands attempted to reproduce the 1960s with a chart battle between Blur and Oasis (only one of whom are reviewed here).Rap, house, garage, shoegaze, Britpop, big beat, grunge, drum n bass - Ian gives his final opinion on all of the quality music from a decade that often valued style over substance Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Duncan Edwards, who hailed from Dudley in the Black Country, played for Manchester United and England. He was one of the Busby Babes, the young, brilliant United team formed under manager Matt Busby in the mid-1950s. Even in such esteemed company Duncan stood out, noted for his skill, physical strength and toughness. Tragically he was one of the eight players who died as a result of the Munich air disaster in February 1958. Many of Duncan's contemporaries described him as the best player they had played with, played against, or had seen play.David Barratt who, like Duncan, is from the Black Country, has spent a lifetime researching Duncan's history. He brings together in this book -- with the help of his life-long friends David Harrison and Alan Hughes -- the outstanding, but sadly brief, life of the great footballer. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Ian Moss's second volume of singles reviews, following The Original Soundtrack that covered 1970-79, covers a decade of extreme political upheaval. From the threat of nuclear war and the miner's strike to acid house and the fall of the Berlin Wall, there was plenty to get worked up about in the eighties, but great societal panics often bring with them fantastic music. As a part of no tribe Ian runs his eye over the profusion of musical genres produced by the decade from the dying embers of post-punk to early house and garage, the rise of hip-hop, the burst of colour brought by new romantics and synth-pop which sat besides the likes of George Michael, Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna at the top of the pop charts. Yet even these stars were soon stopped in their tracks by advances in technology that allowed hits to be composed in bedrooms by innovative and talented artists who would never have got through the door at a major label in previous eras yet became the basis for whole new musical genres. Ian Moss takes the reader on a journey through arguably the most influential decade in music history. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. One of the most perceptive descriptions of Manchester City's play during their glory years was made by Manchester Evening News reporter Peter Gardner who said that "When Youngy plays, City play". For all the talk in the intervening years of greats such as Summerbee, Bell and Lee, it was the local lad made good who made most impact when it mattered. A tall, leggy striker with a venomous left-foot shot, Young scored in every significant game for City in the late 60s. Scorer of two goals in the 1968 Championship win up at Newcastle, the scorer of the 1969 FA Cup Final winner and the first goal in the 1970 Cup Winners' Cup final, Neil Young played as significant a role in the success and style of the Mercer-Allison partnership as anyone. Yet by 1972 he was allowed to leave the club as City began their now familiar relationship with underachievement and mismanagement. In 'Catch a Falling Star', Neil Young explains what he has been up to in the years since his sizzling shots stung the hands of the country's finest goalkeepers. Here he frankly discusses the problem that faced footballers of the pre-Premiership era: "When I left Rochdale for the last time one Friday afternoon I had a week's wages.about GBP60. I drove home and sat in my lounge for about two hours, wondering what the hell I was going to do. I had a car on HP, a mortgage, a wife and three children to feed. I was the provider who could no longer provide. I had no savings whatsoever and my wife didn't work. I didn't see it coming. It was a calamity waiting to happen." Thus starts Neil's decline into illness and depression. During the next painful decade Neil suffered numerous illnesses, lost his family, his mother and survived a suicide attempt. Thankfully, he has emerged with his spirit intact thanks largely to the love of his third wife, Carmen. 'Catch a Falling Star' is the moving tale of a how a star on the wane managed to mount a personal comeback as impressive as any achieved on the pitch by City's star-studded squad of the late 60s. A tall, leggy striker with a venomous left-foot shot, Neil Young scored in every significant football game for Manchester City in the late 60s. This title explains what he has been up to in the years since his shots stung the hands of the country's finest goalkeepers. It discusses the problem that faced footballers of the pre-Premiership era. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
