Softcover. Condition: Good. The first edition of the De duplici copia verborum ac rerum of Erasmus was completed during Erasmus third and most lengthy visit to England (1509-1514). It is dedicated appropriately to John Colet for use in St. Pauls School, which he had recently opened in London. The present translation was made from a seventeenth century copy of the De copia which had first been collated with a copy of the first edition of Schurer, dated January, 1513, with a copy of the first revised edition, published by Froben in 1526, and with a copy of the 1540 Basle Opera Omnia edition representing the text as it appeared in Erasmus third and last revision. No significant differences were found between the seventeen century copy of the Basle edition of 1540.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Perception as a Capacity for Knowledge is the 2011 Aquinas Lecture delivered by John McDowell on February 27, 2011 at Marquette University. Professor McDowells Lecture is the 75th in this esteemed series hosted by the Philosophy Department at Marquette. Past lecturers include Mortimer Adler, Anton. C. Pegis, Yves Simon, Jacques Maritain, Etienne Gilson, Bernard Lonergan, S.J., John N. Findlay, Alvin Plantinga, Paul Ricoeur, Alasdair MacIntyre, Louis Dupre, Myles Burnyeat, and Margaret Urban Walker.A central theme in much of Professor McDowells work is the harmful effects, in modern philosophy and in the modern reception of premodern philosophy, of a conception of nature that reflects an understanding, in itself perfectly correct, of the proper goals of the natural sciences. In a number of contexts, he has argued that we can free ourselves from the characteristic sorts of philosophical anxiety by recalling the possibility of a less restrictive conception of what it takes for something to be natural.

Book
Softcover. Condition: Good. Translated by Dr. Russell Dees. Commissioned by Aarhus University, Denmark. A two volume translation of the major work of the most important Danish philosopher since Kierkegaard. At the time of his death in 1981, K. E. Lgstrup was in the process of completing his four volume treatise entitled Metafysik. As his recent biographer Hans Hauge put it, this work was Lgstrups summa theologica, the culmination of a lifetime of reading and thinking. Lgstrup published two volumes of this work during his lifetime. The remaining two volumes were edited and published posthumously in 1983 and 1984, respectively, by his widow and several colleagues: Rosemarie Lgstrup, Svend Andersen, Karstein Hansen, Ole Jensen and Viggo Mortensen. The group has edited and published two additional volumes of K. E. Lgstrups papers. This translation was commissioned by the University of Aarhus, where Lgstrup was professor of theology from 1943 to 1975, and consists of excerpts from all but one of these works. Danes consider Knud Ejler Lgstrup to be the greatest philosophical/theological thinker their nation has produced since Sren Kierkegaard strolled the cobbled streets of Copenhagen. Like Kierkegaard, Lgstrup has the reputation of being a difficult and strong-willed thinker. On the occasion of the thirteenth printing of Lgstrups most widely known work, The Ethical Demand (1956), Poul Erik Tjner described him in the following way:K. E. Lgstrup was an obstinate, headstrong thinker. He thought his own way, one could say. He said much. Often, he said the exact opposite of what the epoch accepted as stock, self-evident truths. If Kierkegaard and hundreds of theologians after him said that Christ lived the most paradoxical life that had ever been lived, Lgstrup said that he had lived the only nonparadoxical life on earth. Lgstrups influence on Danish spiritual life has been colossal. That his ideas have become so widespread is a tribute not only to his authorship but to just as high a degree to the number of people from a wide variety of disciplines who have felt attracted or repelled by Lgstrupian considerations. Lgstrup is recalled as a charismatic figure, one who did not shy away from controversy and who not infrequently expressed his ideas with great eloquence. From the Translators Foreword.

Softcover. Condition: Good. Max Scheler (1874-1928), by testimony of almost all contemporary European philosophers, was one of the most brilliant thinkers in our century. As Heidegger once put it, there is no present day philosopher who is not indebted to him. Others agreed with the Spanish philosopher Ortega y Gasset who wrote that with the sudden death of Scheler, Europe had lost one of its greatest minds it ever had. Whereas his name was in circulation everywhere during the twenties, including in Asia and the Americas, his fame faded away like a comet after his demise at the age of fifty-four. He left behind many printed works and thousands of posthumous manuscripts, all of which material was suppressed by the German Nazi-regime during 1933 and 1945. Publication of his works took only a slow start in 1954. So did translations of them. Among Max Schelers most intriguing early works dealing with the non-rational, emotional depths of human beings is his 1914 investigation into resentment, which increasingly marks the modern era. It was published first in 1912 under the German title, ber Ressentiment und moralisches Werturteil (Ressentiment and Moral Value-Judgment). In 1915 it went into an enlarged edition with the new title, Das Ressentiment im Aufbau der Moralen (The Role of Ressentiment in the Make-Up of Morals). The present Louis A. Coser translation into English is made from the 1915 text. - From the New Introduction by Manfred Frings.
