Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 26 pages, very nicely illustrated inside attractive pictorial covers. Stapled. A memoir of Frank Oates (1840-75), a naturalist, artist and explorer. This memoir briefly covers his trip to the USA and Guatemala, but focuses on his African explorations, the highlight of which was becoming one of the first Europeans to see the Victoria Falls, on New Years Eve 1874. Less than six weeks later, Coates (whose nephew Lawrence Oates found fame as a member of the ill-fatedScott expedition to the Antarctic) was dead. Lobengula and Frederick Selopus have mentions in the text, which is adorned by several reproductions of colour and black-and-white sketches of the Falls, birds and animals of the region, many originally by Oates.
