From Booklist:
Dead Herring showcases work by members of Actus, a Tel Aviv-based group of comics artists who have drawn international attention to their skill and originality. Their strips reflect the contemporary Israeli concerns of terrorism, nuclear secrecy, shadowy government security operations, and emigration as well as such more mundane and universal matters as broken homes, adolescent trauma, and urban ennui. Particularly notable are Batia Kolton's devastating portrait of the tensions that underlie an extended family, Mira Friedmann's tale of love and the secret police, and David Polonsky's technically astounding snapshot of life on an Israeli street corner. Rounding out the collection are international contributions: a modern fable by Frenchman Blaquet about a boy who refused to read, an interview with Japanese underground manga artist Suehiro Maruo, and a preview of Art Spiegelman's highly anticipated In the Shadow of No Towers. Although the Actus artists are as stylistically accomplished and technically innovative as their Western peers, what sets them apart is committed engagement with their society. Gordon Flagg
