Stefan Banz's photographs and videos focus on his seemingly unspectacular family life. Yet these ambiguously charged images penetrate beneath the idyll of the family garden to suggest an abyss where the incomprehensible runs its course. Recording his wife, growing children, and their petty-bourgeois surroundings in Lucerne, Switzerland, his photographs include images of a rag doll hung on a door handle, deck furniture at night, a fur-trimmed baby outfit lying on the bathroom floor, or a little boy surrounded by garden hoses. Banz, in his words, captures images "of those moments when coincidence and keenness of eye coalesce to discover the mystery of reality in its strange polysemy." This book is the first in a two-volume series created in cooperation with the art critic Christoph Doswald.
