From the Author:
Evolution is one of the top five most inflammatory topics - together with abortion, gun control, gay marriage and immigration. Most people cannot calmly discuss it. The two "sides" shout past each other.
Evolution 2.0 isn't just about new discoveries. It also represents a fresh new way to speak and think about evolution - a De-Militarized Zone, like the strip of land between North and South Korea.
When I announced the Evolution 2.0 Technology Prize at Arizona State University, I defined the new rules of engagement for a peaceful discussion about evolution:
Rules of the DMZ:
1) Put down your weapons.
If we're going to discuss this, you don't come with the intention of shooting somebody dead, even if you don't like them, even if they're from a different tribe than you. We have to talk.
2) No hiding behind screen names.
Anonymity brings out the absolute worst in people. If you have to sign your name to what you're saying online or offline, then you're a lot more likely to say something that's helpful.
3) Assume positive intention.
You need to assume that whoever you're talking to is there for a good reason, even if you don't like their values or even if you don't like their position or their platform or the tribe that they belong to, or their metaphysics or their anti-metaphysics or whatever. You assume that they are here because they want to solve this, and there's a good reason why they believe what they believe, even if you think it's nutty.
4. Get to the truth, not the sale.
This is a phrase from my colleague Ari Galper, a sales trainer. I just want to know the truth. Everybody knows if you go to a car lot and the guy just wants to sell you a car regardless of whether it's the right car for you, you feel this icky used car salesman experience. Why? Because the guy is trying to get to the sale, not the truth. You respect the guy who doesn't sell you a car because he knows it's not right for you.
Evolution 2.0 does not ram anything down your throat. It presents facts you've likely never seen before, and allows you to decide.
I first approached the subject of evolution with terror. I suspected it might destroy my faith and wreck my sense of a purposeful universe. But when I got to the truth of evolution - which reached back more than 70 years in under-publicized scientific literature - what I found was the most spectacular engineering I'd ever seen, performed by the cell itself.
Evolution 2.0 in two sentences: Darwinists underestimate nature. Creationists underestimate God. This is not a religious book; it's a scientific book. Yet in its pages you'll find science and faith can co-exist in the DMZ.
From the Back Cover:
"Evolution 2.0 could signal a paradigm shift in the battle between Darwinian evolution and creation/Intelligent Design. Maybe the war is over."
-Justin Brierley, Host, Unbelievable? radio program and podcast
"Standing on the knife-edge between conventional evolutionary theory and Intelligent Design, this book will inflame both dogmatic Darwinists and Creationists."
-Jean-Claude Perez, author, Codex Biogenesis
"It is amazing that this 'non-biologist' has analyzed life phenomena at the cellular and molecular levels to such depth and width by applying a wide range of available information gained by cutting-edge methodologies in life sciences."
-Dr. Kwang Jeon, Editor, International Review of Cell and Molecular Biology
"Marshall delivers a compelling and forceful synthesis that sets a new standard for discussions about the relationship between science and faith. The result is no less than astonishing."
-Dr. Mark McMenamin, Professor of Geology, Mount Holyoke College
"Any person of faith who cares about how creation reveals God--and how evolution is actually a devastating arsenal of evidence against atheism--should add Evolution 2.0 to the extreme tippy-top of their reading list."
-D. Bnonn Tenant, ThinkingMatters.org.nz
"As a staunch creationist, I was often finding myself trying to fight with Marshall early on, but his arguments and presentation were flawless and compelling. It was refreshing to see someone examine both sides of the debate honestly."
-Marie Sarantakis, Comparative Religion Scholar, Carthage College
"Fluid reasoning; vivid, readable explanations; easy style and enjoyable storytelling."
-Andras Pellionisz, Biophysicist, Founder of Fractogene
"A very readable book and a devastating attack on the neo-Darwinist orthodoxy that evolution is nothing but natural selection acting on random variation."
-Peter Saunders, co-director, Institute of Science in Society, and Emeritus professor of Applied Mathematics, King's College, London
