Encompassing scriptural, historical, folk, and newly commissioned tales, a collection exploring the centrality of the "stranger" in every major faith tradition—a commonality that could create a more compassionate world

Every faith has, as a fundamental moment of its formation, the experience of exile, the experience of losing everything, or being thrown out, of being dispossessed, and of relying on the generosity, or not, of strangers. Furthermore, every major faith tradition has popular stories showing how you are more likely to meet the divine in the outcast, the reject, the beggar, than you are in the king, the prince, or indeed minister, priest, or nun. Faiths are therefore often the first to welcome and help refugees. Classic tales on this theme have been retold here from a contemporary perspective, with humor and wit. Sitting alongside powerful illustrations, the tales serve to remind readers of the centrality of the stranger in all traditions, thereby creating the potential for a more compassionate world. This collection is a resource for reflection, ideal for storytelling groups, for drama, art, and poetry, and a unique educational tool as well.

Book Description Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A selection of brilliant writers, young and old, have come together to retell some of the world's most culturally defining tales about encounters with strangers, with poignancy, humour and wit. The experience of losing everything, of being thrown out, of being dispossessed, exiled and being forced to rely on the generosity (or not) of others, is a fundamental and recurring theme in many world cultures. Furthermore every major spiritual tradition tells stories of how you are more likely to meet the divine in the outcast, the beggar, or the stranger, than you are in the king, the queen, or indeed the priest. Twenty short stories, sitting alongside raw and powerful illustrations, remind readers of the importance of strangers and what stands to be learned from engaging with them. As part of its work on migration and refugees, previous Bene Factum collaborators, ARC (Alliance of Religion and Conservation), have begun to explore what faith and tradition can teach to help us be more compassionate about how we treat those we do not know, in the beautifully written, funny and heart-warming Stories of the Stranger. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability. Seller Inventory # 9781909657441
