Eudora, a small town in middle America, has its share of troubles -- and local stationer Lottie Dougal seems to insert herself smack-dab in the center of most of them. Lottie did a stint in the city and has streaked her auburn curls so they glow as bright as a neon sign. Considered the local "healer," she's one of life's risk takers. So when the local doctor (the object of Lottie's affections) fails to produce an engagement ring, it's rumored that Lottie consults a book of Herbal Cures and Curses. But love potions can backfire.

Lottie's broken heart keeps Eudorans clucking and plotting -- especially when the doctor returns to Eudora with a bride. But there are bigger problems brewing -- the quarry is about to close, and the mayoral election unearths long-buried racial tensions. And in her inimitable style, Lottie decides to do something about this too.

About the Author:
Mimi Thebo, an American writer of Cajun descent, is from Lawrence, Kansas. A former copywriter, cowgirl, and waitress, she holds one of the first PhDs in creative writing. Her work has been translated into more than ten languages and adapted for film by the BBC. The Times (London) has called it “empathetic and humane,” and described her style as “spare, yet poetic.” Professor Thebo lives with her husband and daughter in Somerset, England, where she teaches creative writing at Bath Spa University.
From Publishers Weekly:
In Thebo's ambitious debut romance, Lottie Dougal, born and raised in Eudora, Kans., runs a stationery store in town and dispenses herbal remedies after hours. Newcomer James Emery is the town physician, and the townsfolk watch the pair's immediate courting behavior in fascination. Meanwhile, the number of Mexican workers at the nearby troubled quarry keeps rising, but the population remains invisible to the white locals. By the novel's halfway point, the idyll is shattered: James and Lottie's romance is imperiled, and the quarry's travails draw the town into an ugly confrontation whose focal points are Mexican-American banker Hector Rodriguez and us-against-them janitor Barney Lewis. Thebo is a skilled storyteller—her characters are carefully drawn, and their interactions sparkle—but the novel's conventional romance runs on a different track than its social realist conflict. The two never fall fully into line, despite the liberal doses of humor Thebo injects throughout. (Sept.)
