Women's Almanac 2000: - Softcover

Facts and statistics about women are the focus of a new biennial almanac by an author who has produced several related titles, including Milestones: A Chronology of American Women's History (Facts On File, 1997). This compendium has six major components. Part one is a look at recent news regarding women and women's issues both in the U.S and worldwide. Part two consists of alphabetically arranged entries on women's issues including global overviews on such topics as child custody, clinical trials, domestic violence, political participation, and poverty, to name a few. Part three begins with a country-by-country list of selected statistical indicators (fertility rate, life expectancy, illiteracy rate, etc.). Part three also includes statistics for the U.S., all available in the annual United States Sta tistical Abstract. Part four offers short entries on notable women in U.S and world history. Women from all fields as well as a wide variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds are included. Part five presents a time line of women in U.S. history. Cross-references relate back to the profiles in part four. This is followed by a unique state-by-state survey of women's history and contributions. There is also a time line of women in world history. Part six is a collection of resources and includes a topically arranged bibliography followed by a listing of organizations. The last section of part six is a sampling of Web sites. The two appendixes are a calendar of historical anniversaries important in women's history and a listing of women in government. A thorough index rounds out the almanac.Much of the information is available in other sources that will be updated more frequently. However, the variety of information makes this almanac useful as a ready-reference source for medium-sized high-school and public libraries, especially if they do not have many other statistical sources.
