This historical novel by Robert Middlemiss begins just before the United States' official involvement in World War II when British cadets did aviation training in south Georgia. Doreen Summers, a newspaper reporter, goes to cover the arrival of these British flyers. At the train depot and at the airbase, Doreen meets a Royal Air Force instructor, George Westcott. Friendship and romance develop between Doreen and George. The couple's relationship is set during the uncertainty of war on the U.S. homefront in the Deep South.

From the Back Cover:
I found A Common Glory to be a stunning and fascinating story of an English pilot and a Georgia news reporter finding love in the segregated South during World War II. It is one of the most balanced portrayals of life in the Deep South that I have ever read. A Common Glory's ending breaks your heart then lifts it in hope.

Rosary O'Neill, Ph.D.
