Miracle at Egg Rock: A Puffin's Story - Softcover

Grade 3-4 Puffin Q7 has been taken from her nest in Canada to be raised by National Audubon Society scientists who are trying to restore a nesting colony on a Maine island where puffin colonies were eliminated nearly 100 years ago. This anthropomorphic story about the first puffin to return to Egg Rock includes every possible experience: banding, encounters with whales, getting trapped in a fish net, being covered by oil from a slick and finding a mate. Although the basic information about the life cycle of the puffin is of interest, it is buried in a highly fictionalized story. Puffins are described as talking to one another, walking clumsily and eating things that taste funny. Report writers would do better with the shorter and well-illustrated Puffin (Lothrop, 1984) by Naomi Lewis, which is similar in content. Ellen Fader, Westport Public Library, Conn.
