The Art of Legal Interpretation is a clear, practical guide for court interpreters, and for attorneys and judges who work with them. The book covers everything from language skill requirements to proper courtroom conduct. It sets out the certification requirements and codes of conduct of the federal courts and those of the state of Oregon. It gives practical advice on avoiding common errors, and explains the interpreter's role in grand juries, arraignments, jail interviews, hearings and trials. Though geared toward bilingual interpreters, most of the principles apply to sign language interpreters as well.

From the Author:
I'm thrilled that my book has been so well received by the court interpreter community. As a bilingual courtroom attorney, I have seen the growth of the interpreter profession from the days when courts would dredge up anybody they could find to interpret, to modern times, when most courts recognize the necessity of highly qualified, well trained interpreters to assure fairness to all litigants, regardless of language. I am happy I could contribute to the growth and refinement of a profession that lets all people's voices be heard.
