Henderson received his BA from Drake University in 1965. After graduation he worked as an editor in the sports department at the Des Moines Register and later as a staff writer for Track & Field News. In 1967 he started his long employment with Runner's World, where he eventually worked his way up to senior editor. Henderson is also an adjunct assistant professor of journalism at the University of Oregon. In addition, he writes and produces a monthly newsletter called Running Commentary.
Henderson is a former executive director of the International Runners Committee, which was instrumental in placing a women's marathon in the Olympics. His honors include being inducted into the Road Runners Club of America Hall of Fame and receiving the club's journalism award in 1979, and being named a Drake University Distinguished Alumnus in 1981. Henderson lives in Eugene, Oregon.
