An understanding of flower and fruit structure and function can lead flower fanciers to even greater enjoyment of the plants around them. The six chapters (stamens, pistils, petals, sepals and brachts, patterns, fruits) in this book provide the lay reader with an attractive alternative to dry textbooks, and the nearly 200 excellent close-up photographs of more than 100 familiar plants present a sample of the enormous diversity of form encountered in the floral world. The text is generally accurate and usually clear, although in describing members of the sunflower family, "tube-flower" gets changed to "disc-flower," and "strap-flower" to "ray-flower" without explanation.
