This survey follows the trajectory of museum architecture in America since the birth of Modernism by examining art museums throughout the country, each described in short essays by the architects and museum directors themselves and illustrated with more than two hundred color photographs by architectural photographer Paul Rocheleau. As these examples make clear, museum architecture in the United States has become the only dependable refuge for great architects to push the boundaries of design, the one area of architectural practice in which radically new forms and cutting-edge materials have been welcomed, if not demanded by the museum-going public. Of special interest are designs for a number of museums currently under construction or near completion, including works by Daniel Libeskind in Denver and Frank Gehry in Washington, D.C.
With public interest in museum design at an all-time high, this is an opportune moment for the world to look back at seven decades of architecture for art in America - the work of fifty-three of the world's greatest architects for thirty-nine museums in twenty states.

About the Author:
Scott Tilden is the editor and conceiver of architecture books, including American Synagogues: A Century of Architecture and Jewish Life and Daniel H. Burnham: Visionary Architect and City Planner. Paul Rocheleau has published many books of photographs, including volumes on Frank Lloyd Wright, H. H. Richardson, and Frederick Law Olmsted. Wim de Wit is special collections director of the Getty Research Institute and the author of numerous books and articles on architecture.
From Booklist:
This pictorial survey of three-dozen existing museums and works in progress suggests we are living in a golden age of cultural architecture. Once Western culture built cathedrals as expressions of wealth and power; today it's innovative architecture. And museum building has become an art in itself, one fraught with the peril of overshadowing the collection inside. Yet this is a celebratory book that matches museums and architects' statements with Rocheleau's flattering and seductive photos (works in progress are represented by renderings and models). There's a museum of wine and a museum of glass, but most of the buildings shown are repositories of art. It's a coast-to-coast tour, though not exhaustive. And the arrangement is alphabetical rather than chronological, so an opportunity to evaluate museum design as a continuum or evolution of ideas is largely lost. Still, the main ingredient in this browser's guide is what we can learn about visual dazzle, inventive building, and the lure of monumental space devoted to the wonders of art. Steve Paul

Book Description Hardcover. Condition: New. In recent years, museums have achieved the status of architectural monuments in their own right, especially in America, where the museum itself is often as much a focal point as the art it displays. With exciting new buildings currently under way in New York, Denver, Minneapolis, Atlanta, and Boston, now is the perfect time for this survey of 39 museums throughout the United States, by more than 50 of the world's greatest architects, from Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Kahn to Santiago Calatrava, Frank Gehry, and Richard Meier. This landmark publication looks at American art museums designed since the Museum of Modern Art was completed in New York in 1938, including the Getty Center, the Kimbell Art Museum, the High Museum of Art, Houston's Museum of Fine Arts, Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art, the Phoenix Art Museum, and the Milwaukee Art Museum. Each building is described in short texts by the architect and museum director and documented in beautiful photographs by renowned photographer Paul Rocheleau. As this dazzling book shows, the art museum has become one area where architects are allowed, even encouraged, to push the boundaries of design with radical new forms and cutting-edge materials.
