Salty Takes Off

Grade 1-3-- A story based on the true adventure of a dog who fell out of an airborne plane over a snowy wilderness. Zack, the repairman for the local airfield, and his dog, Salty, are settling in for the winter in a small Alaskan village. Salty becomes a regular passenger/companion for the pilot. One rough day, the small plane is tossed around so fiercely that Salty is thrown against the cabin door and it pops open. He tumbles through space, landing miraculously unscathed in a drift-covered bramble patch. Woven into the story line are slight introductions to some of the Arctic animals and to the manner in which Alaskans in remote areas get supplies. The essence of icy temperatures and vastness of the landscape are depicted with a panoramic quality in the watercolor illustrations. Children will have empathy for Salty, who wears such a worried, lost expression on his face, and they will be warmed with the show of joy at his welcome rescue. These striking illustrations sweep across double pages next to small amounts of text on each page.
