In the tradition and format of its predecessors (which treated American and British literatures), this work "presents a selection of critical opinions about some 80 twentieth-century authors of the Iberian Peninsula, writing in Spanish, Catalan, Galician, and Portuguese." Major writers only are included; each is entered alphabetically, with criticisms appearing chronologically to reflect emerging aspects of an author's opus. The introduction traces the development of Iberian literatures from the turn of the century.
