Founded in a pine forest on the East Texas frontier, Carthage assumed the name of one of the greatest cities of the ancient world. Although Carthage, Texas, did not become a bustling metropolis, the community has enjoyed a long history as the type of stable town that forms the backbone of America. For more than a century and a half, residents have played roles--at times prominently--in the historical and cultural life of Texas and the nation. Carthage has produced decorated war heroes, internationally famous country music stars, a noted American historian, and a groundbreaking political figure. As the home of Tex Ritter, Gentleman Jim Reeves, Linda Davis, and the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, the community has become a country music mainstay. Beyond its celebrities, however, Carthage has most importantly produced generation after generation of patriotic and hard-working men and women.

Title: Another book on the way
Author:Gina Duwe
Publisher: Gaxette Xtra
Date: 11/24/09

Evansville will be at the center of another book authored by local historian Ruth Ann Montgomery and John Ehle.

This fall, Montgomery had her book "Evansville" published by Arcadia Publishing in its series "Images of America." Now, she's teaming up with Ehle for another book in Arcadia's series call "Then and Now," featuring current and past photos of houses, businesses and street scenes. Ehle, an Evansville native who's been doing several veterans projects in town, has taken all of the "now" photos for the book. Montgomery will be scanning in the "then" photos and writing the text for the book.

The book likely will be for sale late summer/early fall next year.

Many of the photos that Ehle did were taken from the same angle as a 1900 publication, "Glimpses of Evansville," Montgomery said. Other "then" photographs will come from postcards and early photographs.

Evansville will be the first Wisconsin community in the "Then and Now" series, publishers told Montgomery.
