Beginning with an explanation of the ozone molecule and continuing with a Jekyll-Hyde analogy of the positive/negative nature of it, the author clearly sets the stage for students in pursuit of answers. The organization is excellent, with the clear message that in order to address the scientific, as well as the philosophical, questions, one must first understand the facts. Technical terms are well balanced with everyday examples of how the changing ozone can affect humans, animals, plants, and the supply of natural resources. Crisp black-and-white photographs, diagrams, and maps illustrate the text. Concluding chapters offer suggestions for taking action and include addresses for government agencies and environmental groups. Youngsters will enjoy the behind-the-scenes details, as well as learning about scientists who pursue the investigation with all the dedication of crime-stopping detectives.
