From Booklist:
Gr. 1-2. In this upbeat beginning reader, a boy greets his mother when she returns home from work with "Can we go to the park to play?" The rest of the book recounts their expedition to a city park: eating a hot dog; observing people, rabbits, and kites; feeding ducks; and playing at the slide, jungle gym, and sandbox. The artwork, which looks like a combination of ink, paint, and pastel crayon, expresses clearly and without sappiness the boy's affection for his mother and their happiness in an outing together. The rhyming text keeps the action moving along in a satisfying way. A simple, pleasing book featuring an African American family. REVWR
