As they become larger and larger, it is impossible for the man to ignore his dream of becoming a sailor. In a delightful marriage of illustration and text, Rassmus develops this fanciful tale with generous doses of humor and fine writing. The consequences of the man denying his dream grow more preposterous and funny until a huge ship splits the walls of the hospital where he has gone to seek a cure for his "dream disease," and he is forced to make his getaway on the back of his cow. The matter-of-fact tone makes a talking cow named Africa (after her distinctive markings) believable. "Don't worry. Sell your farm and buy a ship," she advises, and when he acts on this advice, he makes the transformation from Farmer Enno to Sailor Enno. The full-color, full-page illustrations are whimsical and detailed, sometimes telling part of the story. The impact of the surprise ending is, in fact, entirely visual. The artist's use of light and shadow, the unique perspectives in his paintings, and the humorous details will fascinate children and make the book one with wide appeal.
