Gr 6-9-Numerous illustrations and a thin text will attract readers to this book, but they will struggle to find the information they need in it. Organization is minimal. Facts are presented, but not in a logical order. For example, one page includes a "Fact File" that discusses the origin of the names Nippon and Japan, a detailed cutaway picture of a plate boundary, a chart of the main islands with percent of the total population and share of GDP (explained only in the glossary), and a map of Japan's main islands. Every page has at least one, but usually two or more charts, diagrams, color photos, or sidebars in addition to some text, which is not always related to the illustrations. There is little logic to the words included in the glossary, and some definitions are of dubious value. The index is of a similar incomplete nature. No source documentation is given.
