This two-volume set teaches students about the early days of the slave trade and the contributions made by Africans—both free and enslaved—to the greatest moments of American history. Students will learn about the fight against slavery, the laws that made African Americans less than equal even after slavery was abolished, and the continuing struggle for civil rights. The volumes also cover the many remarkable African-American achievements in science, the arts, business, and popular culture.

The history of African Americans is rich, vast, and sometimes overwhelmingly complex for students approaching the subject for the first time. This two-volume set begins with an overview essay of the remarkable history of African Americans, from the earliest days of slavery to the stories, figures, achievements, and continued struggles of the present day. An integrated timeline and A-Z section of key events, issues, groups, and terms—including relevant court cases and legislation regarding African Americans—clearly present significant historical aspects for students. Important primary source documents are highlighted in sidebars throughout each volume. Special care is taken, particularly with older documents, to excerpt enough material to contextualize quotes and make them more understandable, but not so much material that young readers lose interest in a sea of daunting language. Unfamiliar terms are further explained in call out boxes that define each term, and the terms are also supplemented by a glossary.

Book Description:

This two-volume set, written at the 6th- through 8th-grade reading level, presents the remarkable history of African Americans, from the earliest days of slavery to the stories, figures, achievements, and continued struggles of the present day.

From Booklist:
This attractive almanac provides information on topics of interest to users in middle school and up. Each volume contains about four chapters that are arranged in chronological sequence and take the user from the earliest to the present time. Each chapter provides a survey of the topic; for example, "Unwilling Immigrants: Slavery in Colonial America, 1492-1763" informs the user about the nature of slavery, how it came to the Americas, and how it changed as it was codified under law until the American Revolution. These surveys are brief, covering a great deal of information in a simplified manner. They are accompanied by alphabetically arranged entries that provide slightly more detail on specific people, events, and terms. Throughout the volumes are sidebars jammed with lengthy quotes from primary source materials like diaries, poetry, period magazines, and newspapers. Charts and maps (without scale or a compass rose) and small black-and-white photographs add interest and provide additional information. There is also a time line that helps orient users.

Each volume has a glossary; a short bibliography of books on general topics; a list of media, CD-ROMs, and Web sites; and a short list of books on more specific topics like history, folklore, and fiction. Each volume reprints the entire index so users can refer to information contained in both volumes of the set. Unfortunately, the index does not list photographs or sidebar material. The overall arrangement makes this resource slightly more difficult to use for quick sound bites of information than UXL's African American Almanac (1994), but it will be a welcome addition to school and public libraries where there is a need for additional information about African N Americans.
