To successfully complete the transition from being a final year pre-reg nursing student to becoming a qualified staff nurse, students need to understand and practise the responsibilities and roles of the registered nurse. Consequently, they need a textbook which goes further than simply outlining the theory of leadership and management and teamwork and gives more than just 'tips' for being in charge.

Nursing: The transition to professional practice has been developed as a one-stop-shop for the principles of professional practice and the skills of the qualified nurse. Taking a logical approach, the authors introduce the role of the qualified nurse before explaining what it means to be in charge, how deliver good care, how to make legal and ethical decisions, and the best ways to work with and teach other staff. Theory is applied to clinical work so readers can easily see the rationale behind daily decisions. Useful for the entire final year, the content is mapped against the transitional module and extremely useful for final year placements as well as providing tips on getting a job and continuing professional development.

Written in an easy to read, student friendly manner the authors have brought together trustworthy and reliable advice in a way that is easy to dip into any time you need it- from writing an assignment, devising a nursing plan, documenting your placement learning outcomes, or finding advice on job applications. This book has been truly designed to help student nurses become registered staff and to prepare for practice.

Review:
"will help third year nursing students and newly qualified nurses make the transition from student nurse to registered professional because not only will they help the reader develop new skills, but it will also guide them through the process of applying those skills in practice."

--Patricia Mills, qualified nurse, England

"Highly relevant to today's nursing practice, easy to read and covers fundamental areas that student nurses/ newly qualified nurse need to be aware of when entering the nursing profession."

--Christine Wint, Education and Development Lead, Leicester City Community Health Services

"should certainly be a core text for students"

--Tim Badger, Programme Director, Birmingham City University

"10/10 I would use this text for all students throughout the final year of training, it is particularly relevant to the transitional module and the Preceptorship period... useful and up to date it demonstrates very clearly the difference in levels of accountability between a student and a
qualified nurse. This book bridges the gap left by others"

--Annabel Coulson, Practice Education Facilitator, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust

"10/10 Covers all topics and skills required by a 3rd year student nurse yet can also be used by a qualified nurse. Clear, concise and easy to relate to the working environment."

--Kay Salisbury, Newly Qualified Nurse

"This book stands out from the rest as an academic but equally accessible textbook which also directly relates to what final year nursing students are experiencing and how they are feeling at the point of transition. With excellent realism in the scenarios and something for every branch of
nursing, it's a shame it wasn't published before I qualified!"

--Sarah Bowyer, newly qualified nurse, Birmingham City University
