Grade 2-4-- Warmly written, this book has humorous black-and-white illustrations that complement a realistic story about life in elementary school at holiday time. Adam Joshua thinks he would make a terrific pilgrim or a fantastic Indian in the Thanksgiving play at school. No one, absolutely no one, wants to be a turkey. But when disgruntled Mrs. Cutwell hands out parts, it's Adam Joshua and his best friend, Nelson, who get the turkey parts. They even have to do a Dance of the Harvest Feast along with the other Thanksgiving foods. There's no way out of this humiliation, so Adam Joshua and his friend gamely go on and manage to steal the show. Adam Joshua and Nelson are admirable turkeys but the girls are a hoot as Pilgrim women protesting not being allowed to steer a ship or carry out business with the Indians.
